Biography
I am a female artist creating paintings that explore the body as a vessel for something greater, a physical container for the metaphysical. Working with oil paint thinned into semi-transparent layers onto linen, I use a vibrant dream-like colour palette to stain the surface and allow ghostly figures to slowly emerge and dissolve throughout the picture plane, by a process of layering gestural marks inspired by shapes, colours and textures found in the natural world. For me, nature provides a sanctuary that allows me to step out of a constant stream of thoughts and into the present moment. This connection to the natural world sits alongside my interest in spirituality, meditation, and my own lived experience, all of which inform an intuitive application of paint.
My paintings explore the duality of our existence: the way our fleshy, massy forms anchor us to the earth and allow for physical touch and connection, while simultaneously shackling us to a finite reality. I am drawn to the tension between this heavy, anchored physical form and the weightless, expansive nature of the soul. I have long been preoccupied with the profound reality of our physical beginning and end, and I have come to view that the dissolution of the physical body is merely a gateway to a more expansive spiritual journey.
In my paintings, the figures are not necessarily present in a traditional physical sense. Instead, the canvas offers a space to contain the energy of spiritual beings within a single, encapsulated moment. Energy is exchanged both through the figures depicted and through the physical act of painting itself, where the surface acts as a contained space for energy, mimicking the way, a body contains a soul. I view time as a human construct, in my work, I aim to pause it, allowing the past, present, and future to coexist at once. I am particularly interested in the vulnerability of the human form, observing figures as they slump and relax, their bodies heavy while their minds appear at peace.
These thinned-down layers of oil paint mimic layers of skin, representing a transcendence of the physical form and mirroring the layers of emotion, experience, and thoughts that define us. I am intrigued by the power of the mind, how our constant internal dialogues can shape and mould our own physical realities. I view the universe as a network of energy, and my paintings as landscapes of the human psyche.
